CITY GUIDE

Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is the capital of Thailand’s northernmost province, a relaxed city surrounded by mountains and rooted in a province rich in Lanna culture, contemporary art, temples and borderland landscapes. The city is smaller and slower than Chiang Mai, but it has its own strong identity built around the Clock Tower, local markets, riverside life and some of northern Thailand’s most recognisable contemporary temples. Beyond the centre, Wat Rong Khun, Baan Dam, Doi Tung, tea plantations, mountain viewpoints, Tham Luang and the Golden Triangle make Chiang Rai one of the best bases for exploring Thailand’s far north.
