SAI KAEW BEACH
Best for: First-time visitors, convenience and nightlife.
Sai Kaew is the easiest all-round base for a first visit.
The beach is long, restaurants and bars are close together and Na Dan is nearby.
It suits short stays and travellers who want everything within easy reach.
The trade-off is noise and crowds, especially on busy weekends and holidays.
AO PHAI
Best for: Social beach stays with a little more breathing room.
Ao Phai sits just south of the busiest Sai Kaew area.
It still has restaurants, bars and accommodation, but the atmosphere is less intense.
This is a good choice for couples and social travellers who want easy evenings without the busiest beach setting.
AO TUBTIM / CENTRAL COVES
Best for: Couples, smaller resorts and relaxed beach time.
Ao Tubtim and the nearby smaller coves offer a more intimate island feel.
You are still within reasonable reach of the northern hub, but evenings are quieter.
These areas work well for travellers who plan to spend more time at the beach than in bars or shops.
AO WONG DUEAN
Best for: Balanced stays, families and beach-focused trips.
Ao Wong Duean is one of Koh Samet’s strongest alternatives to Sai Kaew.
The bay has enough restaurants and accommodation to feel self-contained without being as busy as the north.
It is a good option for longer stays and travellers who want a calm but not isolated base.
AO THIAN / AO WAI
Best for: Quiet, slower stays and more seclusion.
The southern east-coast beaches are noticeably calmer.
Services are more limited and transport back north takes longer.
These areas suit visitors who are happy to stay close to the hotel and beach.
For nightlife or frequent restaurant hopping, they are less practical.
AO PRAO
Best for: Upscale resorts, couples and sunsets.
Ao Prao is Koh Samet’s main west-coast resort area.
The atmosphere is quieter and more polished than Sai Kaew.
It works especially well for romantic trips or visitors who want to stay mainly around the resort and beach.
The trade-off is less direct access to the island’s busiest evening areas.
NA DAN / NORTH VILLAGE
Best for: Practical access and short stopovers.
Na Dan is useful for ferry arrivals, island transport and practical services.
It is not the island’s strongest leisure base.
Most visitors are better staying at one of the beaches unless early departure or logistics are the main priority.
BUSY NORTH OR QUIET SOUTH?
This is the central decision.

For a first short visit: Sai Kaew is easiest.

Koh Samet is small enough that the geography is simple.
The real question is how much convenience you want to trade for quieter evenings.
