Koh Chang is easy to love and easy to underestimate.
The island looks straightforward on a map, but mountains, winding roads and long distances between beaches mean your base matters more than many first-time visitors expect.
UNDERSTAND THE FOUR AREAS
Thailand4U uses four public areas:
White Sand Beach & North.
Klong Prao & Chai Chet.
Kai Bae & Lonely Beach.
Bang Bao & South Koh Chang.
These are practical traveller catchments, not official districts.
They exist because the island’s accommodation, food, nightlife and transport patterns change significantly from north to south.
CHOOSE YOUR BASE FIRST
Pick White Sand for convenience.
Pick Klong Prao for a balanced resort stay.
Pick Kai Bae for a social but comfortable base.
Pick Lonely Beach for more nightlife.
Pick Bang Bao or the south when quiet, boats and scenery matter more than easy access to the northern resort areas.
That choice will shape the whole trip.
FERRIES
Koh Chang is reached from mainland Trat by vehicle ferry.
Treat the mainland piers as connection points, not Koh Chang neighbourhoods.
Ferry terminals, transfer arrangements and operating schedules can change.
Leave extra time when connecting with flights, buses or onward island transport.
GETTING AROUND
Songthaews and taxis cover the main visitor routes.
Scooters are common, but Koh Chang is not a beginner-friendly place to learn.
Steep hills, sharp bends, rain and traffic increase risk.
Rent only if you are properly licensed, insured and experienced.
Otherwise use shared or private transport.
WATERFALLS
Klong Plu is one of the easiest major nature stops from the west coast.
Than Mayom gives another waterfall option on the east side.
Conditions are seasonal.
Water levels, slippery trails and temporary closures can change the experience substantially.
BEACHES
Do not try to “collect” every beach.
Pick a good base and visit one or two others.
White Sand is developed.
Klong Prao is broad and resort-oriented.
Kai Bae is social and scenic.
Lonely Beach is more informal.
The far south is quieter.
DIVING AND SNORKELLING
Marine trips are one of Koh Chang’s strongest activities.
Bang Bao is an important excursion gateway.
Offshore trips may include reefs and island groups such as Koh Rang depending on season, weather and current park access.
Use current operator information rather than assuming a fixed route.
BANG BAO
Bang Bao deserves time even if you are not taking a boat trip.
The pier, waterfront setting and seafood give the south a very different identity from the west-coast resort strips.
It is also a practical place to understand how important the sea remains to Koh Chang’s tourism economy.
VIEWPOINTS
Kai Bae Viewpoint is one of the best-known scenic stops.
Roadside viewpoints can be beautiful, but do not stop unsafely on bends or narrow shoulders.
Use established stopping areas.
NIGHTLIFE
If nightlife matters, focus on White Sand, Kai Bae and especially Lonely Beach.
Klong Prao is calmer.
Bang Bao and the far south are much quieter.
Do not book a remote southern resort and then expect easy late-night transport back from Lonely Beach.
FOOD
Eat seafood at least once.
Try local Thai restaurants as well as resort dining.
The further south and east you go, the fewer choices you may have within walking distance.
Check the dining situation before booking an isolated property.
MONSOON REALITY
The wetter season changes Koh Chang.
Rain can be heavy, the island becomes intensely green, waterfalls improve and smaller-boat plans can become less predictable.
Vehicle ferries normally remain the key link, but marine excursions may be more weather-sensitive.
Check current forecasts and operator advice.
HOW LONG SHOULD YOU STAY?
Three nights: Quick beach break.
Five to seven nights: Best for most first visits.
Seven nights or more: Good for diving, multiple areas, the east side and slower travel.
FIRST-TIME MISTAKES TO AVOID
Do not choose a hotel only by price without checking its area.
Do not assume short map distances mean quick road journeys.
Do not learn to ride a scooter here.
Do not treat Trat Airport or mainland ferry piers as part of the island.
Do not build a tight flight connection around an exact ferry arrival time.
Do not assume every marine trip runs every day.
And do not spend the whole trip on the same resort strip if you have enough time to explore.
A GOOD FIRST KOH CHANG TRIP
A balanced first visit could include:
- one main west-coast base;
- White Sand or Klong Prao;
- Kai Bae Viewpoint;
- Klong Plu Waterfall when conditions suit;
- an evening in Kai Bae or Lonely Beach;
- Bang Bao;
- one snorkelling or diving day if conditions allow;
- seafood;
- one quieter beach;
- and enough time to slow down.
Koh Chang works best when you respect its scale instead of trying to compress it.
