Koh Phangan is one of those islands where the wrong base can completely change the feel of the trip.
The four main traveller zones have very different identities, and the island is too spread out to ignore location.
HAAD RIN & SOUTHEAST
Best for: Full Moon Party, nightlife and social beach stays.
Haad Rin is the obvious base if the Full Moon Party or late-night social life is a major reason for your trip.
Restaurants, bars, accommodation and beach activity are concentrated close together.
During major event periods, the atmosphere can become extremely busy.
Outside those dates, the area is noticeably calmer but still more nightlife-oriented than most of the island.
Choose this area if you want energy.
Avoid it if you want quiet evenings.
THONG SALA & BAAN TAI
Best for: Transport, convenience and a central south-coast base.
Thong Sala is the island’s main arrival and service hub.
Markets, restaurants, shops, transport and ferry access make it practical for almost any type of traveller.
Baan Tai extends east along the south coast and adds beach stays, bars and easier access towards Haad Rin.
This zone is a strong all-round choice for travellers who want to explore several parts of the island.
SRI THANU & WEST COAST
Best for: Wellness, longer stays, sunsets and relaxed social life.
Sri Thanu and the west coast are ideal for travellers interested in yoga, wellness, cafés and slower days.
The area attracts many longer-stay visitors and has a strong international community.
Sunset beaches and easy access to nearby west-coast communities make it especially appealing for couples and repeat visitors.
Nightlife exists, but it is not the defining feature.
CHALOKLUM & NORTH/EAST COAST
Best for: Quiet beaches, diving, fishing-village atmosphere and slower stays.
The north and east are much more spread out than the southern corridor.
Chaloklum provides a local village base, while beaches and resorts extend across the north and into the more isolated east coast.
This zone suits travellers who want distance from the island’s busiest nightlife.
It is especially good for beach-first stays, marine activities and a quieter rhythm.
Transport matters more here.
THONG SALA OR SRI THANU?
This is one of the main choices for longer-stay visitors.
Choose Thong Sala if you want: - ferries and transport nearby; - markets and everyday services; - easy access across the island; - practical convenience.
Choose Sri Thanu if you want: - wellness and yoga; - cafés and healthy food; - sunset beaches; - a stronger long-stay atmosphere.
Both are useful, but they create very different daily routines.
HAAD RIN OR BAAN TAI?
Choose Haad Rin if nightlife is the priority.
Choose Baan Tai if you want access to nightlife without staying directly inside the party hub.
Baan Tai also makes island exploration easier because it sits on the south-coast corridor.
NORTH OR EAST?
The wider north and east share a quieter identity, but distances matter.
Chaloklum and the northwest are more connected to the main road network and western beaches.
The east coast feels more isolated and resort-oriented in several places.
Check the exact hotel transfer and road access before booking.
WHICH AREA SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
For Full Moon Party: Haad Rin & Southeast.
For a first all-round stay: Thong Sala & Baan Tai.
For wellness and longer stays: Sri Thanu & West Coast.
For quieter beaches and diving: Chaloklum & North/East Coast.
Koh Phangan does not have one universal best base.
Choose the part of the island that matches the trip you actually want.
